Fate of detailing center to be decided on Dec. 6

The fate of the vehicle detail shop proposed for the empty lot located on the corner of Reyes Adobe Road and Canwood Street in Agoura Hills will face a third round of debate––and presumably a resolution––at an Agoura Hills City Council meeting scheduled for Mon., Dec. 6. This is a change from the customary council meeting night of Wednesday.

After several rounds of discussion, debate and wrangling with residents and local businesses who voiced opposition or support for the project, city council members leaned toward denying the variance, which would be necessary under the current architectural plan.

An 11th-hour decision was made to allow the applicant, David Delrahim, and his architect, Francisco Behr, to produce another design, one that wouldn’t require a variance.

Delrahim is seeking a conditional use permit (CUP) to construct a two-story, 10,333-square-foot auto detailing shop on a one-acre parcel off of Reyes Adobe Road near the freeway. The variance is required to construct the building 15 feet from the rear property line instead of the required 35 feet, due to the gabled roofline. City code requires that the setback be equal to the highest point of the roof. The current plan calls for an 1,800-square-foot second story with a gabled roof, with 7,147 square feet of space for auto detailing that would include six bays in a separate building below street level.

If the project is redesigned without a pitched roof, the variance wouldn’t be necessary. Council members would then face fewer hurdles to approve the project, but the end result might be a far less attractive building.

Residents living directly behind the proposed project object to the detail shop. They’ve cited quality of life issues, including noise, fumes, parking on residential streets and safety concerns. Many residents also complained that the shop would be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and that a constant hum would be heard. Other residents and businesses owners voiced support for the project.

The public hearing will be reopened on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at city hall.
