Farewell to water board member

With this election finally behind us, the real work is now ahead of everyone. It’s our leaders role to lead, and the public’s role to not just watch, but participate, and keep our elected officials on the best path.

I want to take a moment to say a special thank you—to Joe Bowman. For those of you that don’t know, Joe has been an integral part of this community from the beginning.

He worked as general counsel for American-Hawaiian Land Company, the folks that originally created Westlake Village. He was involved in the development of Three Springs—Bowman Knoll Drive is named after him. And he has been active not only for the water district but in our local schools, the Wellness Foundation, Many Mansions, HomeAid and, knowing Joe, I’m sure even more.

Ten years ago, when the water district needed to fill a vacated board seat, Joe stepped up to the plate. I don’t think he knew anything about water at the time, but he dove in (no pun intended), learned all that he could, and for the next 10 years worked hard to do what he thought was best for the district. That’s 10 years of focusing on something that so many of us take for granted and often don’t think to care about.

Those that know me, know this comes from the heart: Whether I agree with them or not, I have so much appreciation for anyone that is willing to serve their community. In Joe’s case, I not only appreciate the considerable time and effort he makes, but the breadth of organizations he works with, as well as his devotion to each one of them. His deep dedication and willingness to serve is an example we should all follow.

I want to say a personal thank you for all he does and helping to make Westlake Village the place that it is. And I look forward to seeing what he does next.
