Paper shredding, recycling drive

The Sustainability Showcase and Recycling Event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Feb. 24 on the Oak Park High School campus, 899 N. Kanan Road.

The day will have Captain Carl’s Living Tide Pool; Education Through Nature with reptiles, arachnids, insects and a hedgehog; and Nature of Wildworks showing non-releasable wild animals native to California.

Building activities for kids include mini solar boats they can make and race on site, a recycled materials craft project, a scribble machine and sunflower seed pots.

Organizations that will be represented include Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Santa Monica Mountains Fund, Citizens Climate Lobby and Triunfo Sanitation.

Guests who are at least 25 years old can test drive the newest electric cars, and kids at least 12 years old can try out the electric bikes, with guardian permission. An ID is required.

Cuttings and herbs from OPUSD gardens will be sold.

Poison Free Malibu will present rodenticide education.

Demonstrations will be given on PCH Scuba, water-wise strategies and drought-tolerant landscaping.

Middle school students will host a sustainable art showcase.

Free on-site repair will be given to bicycles with minor issues. Go to the recycling event area of the parking lot.

A recycling drive will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The following items will be accepted at the event: electronics (anything with a plug) and batteries in zip-lock bags, clothing, shoes, rugs and other textiles, expired or unwanted medications and liquids, eyeglasses, eyeglass cases, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes and their cases, ink/toner cartridges and bicycles.

On-site paper shredding will be available. The first three boxes per car are free and the cost is $6 per box thereafter.
