Exhibit celebrates work of Ojai ceramic artist





The Ventura County Museum of History & Art will host a reception for the exhibit opening of "Otto Heino: Celebrating 90 Years" from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thurs., March 3 at 100 E. Main St., Ventura. Admission is free but reservations are recommended by calling (805) 653-0323, ext. 10.


The reception is part of the "Alive After Five" campaign featuring music, poetry and art exhibitions at various galleries, stores and restaurants throughout Ventura’s downtown cultural district.


Heino is an American master of ceramic arts who lives and works in Ojai. His works have been exhibited in museums around the world and have won many international awards. His style incorporates pressed leaves, elegant calligraphy and original glazes. The exhibition is in celebration of his 90th birthday in April and features works he created over the past 10 years. More than 50 ceramic pieces will be on display.


The exhibition will be displayed from March 4 to May 22 and is being presented concurrently with "Ceramic Masters: The Art of Vivika and Otto Heino and Their Contemporaries" at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. That show will be on view from March 10 to July 3.


At 2 p.m. Sat., March 19 the museum will host a gallery talk and catalog signing. Tim Schiffer, the museum’s executive director and coauthor of the exhibition catalog, will talk about the ceramics selected for the exhibition. Heino will make a special guest appearance. The 88-page catalog, illustrated with 60 color plates, will be available for purchase in the museum store. The gallery talk is included with paid museum admission.
