Soo Yeon Kang Westlake salutatorian Soo Yeon Kang hopes to use her many gifts to improve the lives of others. After graduation, she’s heading to Africa for a month with five members of her church to do missionary work, a possible precursor to a career in the medical field. Kang, who will be a freshman at Dartmouth College in the fall, said she’d like to become a medical missionary or an international doctor. A member of the varsity girls’ basketball and golf teams, Kang also served as president of Ambassador’s Club, Earth Club, Math Club and Advanced Anatomy Club.
Sam Seidenberg Sammy Seidenberg is heading to Humboldt State University, where he wants to major in film and make movies. Seidenberg, who’s already started making his own films, has a serious interest in the horror genre. When he’s not thinking about the silver screen, Seidenberg said he gets his kicks skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing or playing lacrosse and hockey. The Westlake Village resident was a member of the hockey and lacrosse teams. Seidenberg credits the Westlake Information Technology Club with allowing him to “spread his wings” in film and technology.
Jeff Miller Playing football in the highly competitive Marmonte League since he was a freshman, and a starter since his sophomore year, graduate Jeff Miller has a good sense of the word rivalry. Next year though, he’ll get a taste of possibly the most heated rivalry in sports. Miller, a resident of Thousand Oaks, is heading to nearby UCLA to pursue his dreams of playing football. While there, the 6-6, 250-lb. defensive end will have the opportunity to line up against his brother, Jimmy, a 2004 Westlake High grad and a sophomore tight end at USC.
J.T. Valine J.T. Valine soared on the soccer field as a four-year member of the Warriors’ successful program, winning the Marmonte League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2005 and coming back in 2006 to be one of the team’s top goal scorers. Valine will spread his wings next year as a cadet at the Air Force Academy in Colorado where he wants to study aeronautical engineering. “My favorite memories (from high school) are from the soccer seasons and being able to see my girlfriend in between every class,” Valine said.
Shirley Pu Shirley Pu is heading off to UC Davis in the fall, where she said she wants to study biomedical engineering. The stellar math student from Newbury Park was treasurer of the Westlake Information Technology Cub and did publicity for the Food Club for a year. When she’s not in school, Pu said, she enjoys “running, collecting stamps, being with friends, reading and dancing.” Her favorite subjects during high school were biology, algebra and computer programming.
