Ethnic diversity hits home for World War II vet

I was born in Iowa. My mother was born in Chicago. My father came from Ireland—an educated man—and became a noted doctor in Iowa.
During World War II I served my country in the Navy, joining the amphibious assault forces that took Kwajalein Island from the Japanese. I served overseas in a combat area for over 18 months and remained in the Navy Ready Reserve until honorably retired.
