Entries sought for photo contest

The National Park Service invites outdoors enthusiasts to enter their best photograph of any site within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in their annual “Spirit of the Mountains” photo contest.

Categories are: plants (flowers, grasses and trees); animals including reptiles, mammals and birds; insects; scenic shots (vistas, seasons and water); people in parklands; and elements of change (earth, wind, fire, and water).

Photographers ages 12 and under may submit up to four entries in their category.

Entries must be submitted between Sept. 1 and 30.

For rules, regulations, an entry form, and a map of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and its 75,000 acres of public parkland, visit www.nps.gov/samo/photo or stop by the National Park Service Visitor Center in Thousand Oaks at 401 W. Hillcrest Drive. Questions may also be asked of any ranger in the Visitor Center by calling (805) 370-2301.

First-, second-, and third-place winners will be determined in each category. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m Sat., Oct. 7 at the opening of the “Spirit of the Mountains” 2006 photo exhibit at the National Park Service Visitor Center.

First-place winners’ photographs will be published in Out- doors, a quarterly brochure about

activities in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Second and third-place winners may have a small inset photo published in Outdoors if space permits. All winners will receive ribbons.

Entries will be exhibited from Oct. 7 to Nov. 30.
