Election Day: We can’t
wait until it’s over

To those of us who believe in voting the old-fashioned way, going to the polls next Tuesday is as natural as polyester. Some of us actually like punching out our chads—possibly in frustration over the lack of a single candidate who even remotely excites us. (Chads—now there’s a word nobody knew until four years ago.)

Part of the reason we like voting in polling places is that we actually expect our votes to be counted.

Some of us are suspicious that absentee ballots are dumped before they’re tallied, probably in a ravine somewhere by disenfranchised third-party sympathizers who return to the scene years later to start a protest against illegal dumping.

Most of us who go to polling places also prefer a real ballot with holes to punch or places to fill in the blanks or make little X’s. We don’t trust touch-screen monitors or voting online.

Hackers already break into our computers and infect them with viruses or spyware. We don’t want electronic voting because it’s too easily corrupted (just like the candidates we’re voting for).

If the wrong people get elected, we want to be certain that it’s our fault and not because somebody cheated us. Our right to make bad decisions should be protected in every way.

Speaking of bad decisions, the polls are expected to be crowded next Tuesday as Americans stand in line to vote against Bush or against Kerry.

We hope everyone wears a smile and carries a pleasant disposition to their polling places.

And regardless of what method you’re using and whom you’re voting against, be sure to exercise your right to vote.
