An elderly man and woman found shot to death in a apparent murder-suicide at their Westlake Village home Feb. 16 have been identified as Sam Lai, 75, and his wife Caroline Min-ling Lai, 73.
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau believe Sam Lai shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Both received gunshots to the torso area, investigators said.
Deputies received a call about the couple’s welfare and at about 6 p.m. last Friday and decided to check on them, Sgt. Robert Gray of the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau told The Acorn. Law enforcement arrived shortly after and pronounced the man and woman dead at the scene, Gray said. The shooting took place approximately an hour earlier.
The home lies in 31400 block of Glenbridge Road atop the exclusive Westlake Trails neighborhood.
“When (deputies) arrived they located a female Asian adult who had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso, and a male Asian adult who also had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
Investigators were seen taking crime photos in the home’s garage, were the incident apparently occurred. Deputies recovered the handgun at the scene.
Caroline Lai was a well-known piano teacher in the community. When she missed several student lessons on Feb. 16, police were notified, The Acorn learned.
