Kevin Paul, 14, son of Robin and Steve Paul of Oak Park and a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 722 in Oak Park, is constructing a raised bed garden at Lindero Canyon Middle School (LCMS), Agoura Hills as an Eagle Scout community service project.

He had proposed the raised bed project to school principal Ron Kaiser in June and upon receiving approval, embarked on a campaign to acquire donated materials from local businesses. Kevin was fortunate in receiving a good response and had nearly $1,100 in materials donated for the project, which he is coordinating with the assistance of a team of helpers.

The goal of the project is to provide a fun way for Lindero students to learn about science firsthand as well as beautify the campus.

When completed, the garden will consist of 15 raised bed boxes inside a gated area on the campus. Students will utilize the garden as part of their science program, studying botany, soil composition and microbiology.

Since the existing soil at the designated garden site on the school campus was too poor to sustain a garden, Kevin’s solution was to create raised bed boxes. When construction is complete, the boxes will be filled with a layer of gravel then filled with a rich garden planting soil.

A freshman at Agoura High School, Kevin has been involved in Scouting for eight years and has earned 19 merit badges including ones in music and bugling.

A trumpet player, Kevin has been the principal trumpet of the Cal State University Northridge Youth Symphony Orchestra for the past two years and was also the principal trumpet of the 2002 SCSBOA Honor Band.

He was in the concert band at LCMS and was selected for an outstanding soloist award last June. Currently, Kevin is in the wind ensemble, jazz band and the marching band at Agoura High School.
