BARN RAISING—Bryan Quintanilla displays the spruced up barn on the property of the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart in Chatsworth. For his Eagle Scout project, Bryan organized and supervised a team of 70 volunteers to paint the barn.

Bryan Quintanilla, a member of Boy Scout Troop 485 in Westlake Village and a senior at Agoura High School, will earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts, after completing his Eagle Scout project.

After more than 90 hours of planning and fundraising, Bryan and a host of volunteers he recruited from his Scout troop, church youth group, high school track and cross country teams, friends and family, repainted a 6,500-square-foot barn on the property of the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart in Chatsworth.

The barn had not been painted in at least a decade, requiring nearly all the paint to be scraped off by hand. More than 70 volunteers devoted nearly 600 hours—300 hours alone to scrape and sand off dried and peeling paint—and used 35 gallons of primer and 20 gallons of paint over four weekends to complete the project.

“The main goal I had in mind for my Eagle Project was to give back to the community before I left for college,” Bryan said. “I learned about the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart from my Scoutmaster, and since the Catholic Church is an important part of my life, I decided to take on the project.”

Bryan raised more than $2,000 in cash and more than $1,000 of in-kind donations to fund the project. He donated all remaining funds raised to his troop’s Eagle Scout Project Fund to support future projects by Scouts in the troop.

Perfect Painting, owned by Eagle Scout Eric Ortlieb, loaned Bryan a paint trailer fully stocked with equipment for the duration of the project. Agoura Equipment Rentals provided scaffolding at no cost for two of the three weekends.

Bryan has been in Scouting since first grade and a member of Troop 485 for seven years. He has earned 37 merit badges including 11 that are required for the Eagle Scout rank, and served as senior patrol leader and in numerous other leadership positions.

He participated in two, twoweek wilderness backpack trips at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and has four times attended Emerald Bay Scout Camp on Catalina Island where he completed several overnight canoe and bike trips and the Boy Scout Mile Swim.

Bryan will attend Stanford University this fall.
