Duo recital to kick off Guild season

IN CONCERT—Pianists Frank Garvey and Yih-Mei Hu will present a concert Sun., Nov. 6 at the Church of the Epiphany in Oak Park to kick off the 11th season of the Epiphany Music Guild for 2016-2017.

The Epiphany Music Guild announces its 11th season of concerts, recitals and choral services to take place at The Church of the Epiphany, 5450 Churchwood Drive, Oak Park.

Admission is free to all performances; contributions for expenses are appreciated.

The season begins with a duo recital by pianists Frank Garvey and Yih-Mei Hu at 6 p.m. Sun., Nov. 6.

The program will include music by Samuel Barber, Sergei Rachmaninov, Terry Riley and Coldplay.

Following the recital, guests can meet the artists at a reception.

A service of choral evensong for the Feast of All Saints will precede the recital at 5 p.m. One need not be an Episcopalian to appreciate this musical service.

Garvey has performed in Ireland, Great Britain, France, Hungary and the United States. He has a private studio, is on the teaching faculty at Los Angeles Community College and Santa Monica College, and is a coachaccompanist at Pierce College.

Hu has performed in Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States. She teaches at Los Angeles Valley College, has given master classes worldwide and is an adjudicator for the Music Teachers Association of California.

The guild’s season continues with:

An Advent service of lessons and carols at 5 p.m. Sun., Dec. 4.

Recital by Duo Gliss—harpists Hee Jin Yoon and Ko Ni Choi—at 6 p.m. Sun., Jan. 8. Preceded by choral evensong at 5 p.m.

Olivier Messiaen’s masterpiece “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” (“Quartet for the end of time”) performed by Trio Céleste and clarinetist Amanda Walker at 7:30 p.m. Sun., Feb. 12. This uplifting work was written while Messiaen was interned in a concentration camp during World War II.

A service of contemplation and prayer in the style of Taizé at 7:30 p.m. Sun., March 5.

Sung service of compline at 7:30 p.m. Sun., April 2.

An all-Beethoven recital by cellist Bang-Eunn Lee wraps up the Guild’s season at 6 p.m. Sun., May 21. Preceded by choral evensong at 5 p.m.

In addition to its regular season of shows, the Epiphany Music Guild is teaming up with Red Door Vineyard of the Church of the Epiphany to jointly present a concert of Bach instrumentals at 5 p.m. Sun., April 30. This event will feature fine food and wine and have an admission fee.
