Driver refresher course for seniors




 

 

The Agoura Hills Department of Community Services Senior Recreation Program will offer a Mature Drivers Renewal Course from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tues., Aug. 24 at the Agoura Hills Recreation Center, 30610 Thousand Oaks Blvd.

No driving is involved.

This renewal class is open to those who have taken the eighthour course in the last three years.

The program, given by Sy Rifkin, is a defensive driving course for seniors aged 55 and up and can help seniors qualify for reduced auto insurance rates.

The cost is $13 for Senior Center registrants or $15 for nonregistrants. For more information, call (818) 597-7361.

Chevre Club will
clean up creek

The Chevre Club will host clean-up hikes along Medea Creek from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sun., Aug. 29 and Sept. 26. Participants will meet by the picnic tables near the upper playground at Chaparral Park, 217 Medea Creek Lane, Oak Park.

Participants should bring their own water, sunhat and comfortable shoes. The club will provide garbage bags, gloves, grabbers, and surprises for the children.

The club will reward the younger children who pick up the most trash. Hikers of every age can participate.0 The trails are stroller and wheelchair-friendly

The Chevre Club is a volunteer project of Chabad of Oak Park. Chevre is an acronym for “Conejo Hikers Enjoying Ventura’s Rural Environs” and it’s also the Hebrew word for “a supportive network of friends.”

Residents travel
to Dodgers game

The Oak Park Community center will offer a trip to see the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wed., Sept. 1. The date is Senior Day, when all trip goers will get a change to go on the field and walk the bases after the game.

The bus will leave from the community center at 10 a.m. and return at 5 p.m.

The cost is $15 which includes tickets and round trip transportation.

books at library

•Leslie Cohen, author of “Trapped Inside the Story,” will speak about and sign her book at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Aug. 19 at the Calabasas Library, 200 Civic Center Way.

The book is a historical biography of Sonya Hebenstreit’s experiences surviving World War II in Lvov, Poland under Russian and German occupation.

Cohen was born and raised in New York City. In 1978, she and her husband, Mitchell, studied Hebrew at Kibbutz Ein Hashofet. They settled there permanently in 1980.

While teaching English in the kibbutz elementary school, Cohen met Sonya Hebenstreit and began writing her biography.

•Linda Chase, author of “Surfing: Women of the Waves,” will discuss and sign her book at 2 p.m. Sat., Aug. 21 at the Calabasas Library.

During a visit to Oahu, Chase experienced a new found passion for surfing. She lives in the Los Angeles area and has written for many publications.

Oak Park adults
to play basketball

The Oak Park Community Center will host an inaugural adult basketball league.

The eight-week league will begin Sept. 1. Games will be played at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. at the Medea Creek Middle School gym.

League fees are $350, which includes referee fees. Space is available for six teams and registration will close when the league fills.

The Chumash Intertribal Singers will give a performance from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sat., Aug. 14 at the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center, Lynn Road and Via Goleta, Newbury Park.

The singers will share social songs and dances of many local tribal regions.
