Docents sought for Adamson House

Training for volunteer docents at the Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum will begin Tues., Jan. 14 at 23200 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu.

The program will last six weeks and classes meet 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Docents are asked to volunteer eight hours a month.

Cost of training materials and membership is $40.

Trainees will learn the story of Malibu’s land-grant history and its purchase by Frederick Rindge in 1892. The course includes the Adamson House, an ornate example of the Spanish-Colonial Revival style completed by architect Stiles Clements in 1930.

The course will also cover the Malibu tiles which decorate the interior and exterior of the house.

Those who complete the training will be members of the Museum Interpretive Association and will be Adamson House tour guides during regular museum hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Docents may also give tours at weddings held on the property, lead Full Moon tours, serve as garden docents or lead the new children’s program on the lagoon and its shore and water birds.

Volunteers are also needed to work in the gift shop. All gift shop proceeds support the docent program and contribute to funds used to maintain the house.

Museum volunteers are invited to ongoing training programs, usually visits to other historical sites, and to attend a variety of social events. Free state park passes are awarded for hours of service.
