Dive in, help the aquatic program

Damn the torpedoes (read: economy), it’s full steam ahead for the Agoura Water Polo Foundation and its effort to raise funds for a new aquatic center at Agoura High School.

With the blessing of the school district, the foundation wants to renovate the Agoura High swimming pool to the tune of $1.9 million. The school’s 40-year-old pool is deteriorating and costly to maintain. The old facility is too small and dilapidated and practice times are limited. It was almost shut down recently due to repairs and expenses.

In light of the success of the Charger aquatics program— last year both boys and girls won Marmonte League water polo titles while the boys won CIF—the time has come to give the school a new state-of-the-art, 30-meter competition pool that can be used by students, clubs and other groups.

The AHS Water Polo Foundation hopes to partner with the Los Angeles Water Polo club and USA Water Polo to make the dream a reality.

But neither the school district’s capital improvement bonds nor its proposed parcel tax will pay for the new pool. It will take contributions from individuals and businesses proud of their local high school and supportive of its programs to make the financing possible. So far, only about $150,000 has been raised using casino nights, wine tastings and other events. You can see there’s still a long way to go.

First, the AHS water polo program needs to put away old baggage. The team lost longtime coach Dustin Litvak, who left Agoura High to become an assistant at Southern Cal, and hired Luther Weidner from L.A. Water Polo. But when things didn’t work out at USC, Litvak returned to AHS and the short romance with Weidner came to a bizarre end. Hopefully, the confusion over coaches has ended and the quest for a new pool can resume.

The time has come to build a championship pool for a championship program at Agoura High.
