Discrimination is unacceptable

I don’t blame The Acorn for publishing letters expressing opinions contrary to mine. America was founded on principles that support differences in thoughts, practices, religions, etc. However, trouble emerges when people seek to segregate others.

Expression against homosexuality isn’t just another principled opinion when used to justify discrimination. You may be uncomfortable with same-sex behavior, but you should question this feeling. What assumptions are you making? Most likely, you are misinformed. Perhaps you’ve been taught by your parents or religious leaders that homosexuality is a sin or the cause of social ills. Homosexuality has been wrongly used as a scapegoat for many problems.

I encourage you to examine the source of your beliefs and reeducate yourself about human sexuality. As you learn, you’ll realize that normal sexuality is impossible to define. Just by examining Dr. Alfred Kinsey’s studies of human sexual behavior we can see that homosexual behavior is significant across ages, races and genders, thereby making it a normal part of sexuality. The variation of sexuality is infinite.

We’d like to think people fall into clear-cut, binary categories: gay and straight, man and woman, right and wrong. But as you explore these categories, you’ll realize it’s impossible to define their boundaries.

Classification of humans isn’t important. Acceptance of our variation is paramount. Natural human variation is integral to our adaptation and survival as a species.

Homosexuality is normal, even if you don’t wish to accept this fact. Same-sex behavior has been documented throughout history, in all cultures, and across species. Sexual preference is not something that spreads like a disease or can be taught. It’s silly to avoid teaching your children about these truths. Accept and embrace our natural differences.

Don’t fear them.
