Debate heats up

In regards to Robert W. Van de Walle’s letter in the Jan. 25 Acorn about a global warming “hoax,” I have only disbelief that anyone could be so blind.

The vast, vast majority of scientific research indicates that the average temperature of the Earth has risen 0.6 plus or minus 0.2 degree Celsius since the late 19th century, and 0.17 C per decade in the last 30 years.

This is an observable fact and is borne out by records. Now whether this is a result of human action can still be debatable, but the rise in global temperature simply cannot be denied.

Van de Walle cites some authorities that deny global warming, including a senator, a random geophysicist and the Oregon Petition, which is known to have numerous problems (look it up on Wikipedia).

Meanwhile, let’s see who believes global warming is real and is a problem: the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the national science academies of the G8 nations (plus Brazil, China and India), the U.S. National Research Council, the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union and many others.

The only major scientific organization that explicitly rejects the finding of human influence on recent climate is the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

I wonder why that would be.

Lastly, ask yourself this: Who stands to gain and lose
from global warming? Answer: Nobody, and almost every major industry (oil, auto,
power). Why would anyone want to claim a crisis when there isn’t one?
