Story corrected 11:01 p.m. July 17, 2018. An earlier version of this article indicated the dive team was looking for the body for multiple hours; they were actually looking for a gun. The body had been recovered hours earlier.

Members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue dive team searched Westlake Lake for several hours Tuesday after the body of an adult male was recovered from the water earlier in the evening. Around 10:50 p.m., they came up with a gun.

Early indications are the man took his own life, Capt. Denise Sliva said.

Around 5:20 p.m. July 17, deputies responded to a home on Windward Circle in the Westlake portion of Thousand Oaks. The body was found off a private dock near the Triunfo bridge not far from the intersection of Westlake Boulevard and Triunfo Canyon Road.

Divers entered the water shortly after 8 p.m. Officers were seen shining a spotlight off one of the lake’s private docks while three divers were in the water searching for the gun. The weapon was found around 10:45 . Sergeant Steve Jenkins said it was important to recover the weapon because it was evidence in the investigation, but also that removing the gun from the lake was a matter of public safety.
