Today is Women’s Equality Day.
The day was first established in 1971 and was instituted by then U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug. The date commemorates the passage in 1920 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave U.S. women the right to vote.
The observance of Women’s Equality Day also calls attention to the continuing efforts of women toward full equality.
