Illegal immigration has been a main issue in the Trump administration, particularly after last September’s decision to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. A better, more effective solution would be an amnesty bill for all undocumented immigrants in the country with no record of violent crime.
Granting work permits and Social Security numbers to those who can prove they have been in the country for certain amount of years would not only create a new source of revenue but also prevent an influx of new immigrants. The money generated through the cost of work permits as well as the back taxes could go to border security, including the building of the wall without have American taxpayers pay for it.
Granting legal status instead of immediate citizenship would appease the concerns of those who feel that the welfare system or financial aid would be negatively impacted.
DACA, while a decent temporary solution, was not the best solution, but immigration reform remains an urgent issue.
Millions of lives are at stake and Congress has an obligation to fix this.
