Council election down to the wire

As a 17-year resident of Calabasas, I am grateful for the vision and leadership our current City Council provides.

I am proud to be part of a city that truly supports its public schools. I am delighted every time my family and I visit our beautiful parks and library and enjoy our safe, well-managed city.

While nothing is perfect, we are blessed to live in a community run by well-meaning and thoughtful leaders who care about schools, seniors, the environment and local businesses. I urge all voters to elect David Shapiro, Mary Sue Maurer and James Bozajian on March 5.

As The Acorn editorial wisely noted several weeks ago, there is no real controversy in this election. Please look beyond any negative and dishonest attacks on our current council and consider the facts.

Calabasas is going in the right direction, and David Shapiro, Mary Sue Maurer and James Bozajian are dedicated public servants who are happy to hear resident concerns and have helped craft a Calabasas we can be proud to call home. I urge all voters to elect them on March 5.

I have known Mary Sue Maurer for 10 plus years. In all that time I have found Mary Sue to be a caring, supportive parent, a forthright and up-front woman involved in making Calabasas a wonderful community in which to live, and an amazing teacher at a school for kids with learning differences.

I have never known Mary Sue to be petty, small minded or participate in any back-stabbing behavior or the spreading of false commentaries, as is the style of one of the current candidates for City Council.

I have very little regard for someone who engages in that kind of dirty political campaigning.

I will continue to support the kind of responsive candidate who clearly has our community at the top of her list and that is our current mayor, Mary Sue Maurer.

I am still angry that when Jonathon Wolfson left the Calabasas City Council, the council thwarted the will of the people of Calabasas by appointing David Shapiro.

James Bozajian and Mary Sue Maurer decided to support Shapiro, someone more in line with their political beliefs, rather than support one of the candidates who had received much of the popular votes in the previous election.

For this reason, I am voting for Jody Thomas, who with her Right to Vote Initiative will make sure that this will never happen again.

As the only candidate endorsed by the L.A. Democratic Party, Jody Thomas is clearly the best choice for Calabasas City Council.

Although I have had the pleasure of knowing James Bozajian for many years, as I read his election materials recently I was struck by the sheer volume of his accomplishments in our community.

Here is a man who has shown his love for Calabasas by his actions over many years, and we are lucky to have him. In 16 years of service, he has never missed a City Council meeting or a single vote.

James brings a balanced, thoughtful and open-minded approach to our city government, and he has always been a calm, steadying and moderating presence at City Hall. James is also highly accessible and readily approachable to his constituents.

We could not ask for a more able and dedicated representative, and I urge you to re-elect James Bozajian to another term in office on March 5.

David Shapiro is an outstanding choice to serve on the Calabasas City Council. I wholeheartedly endorse this man.

David Shapiro has represented me in two separate legal cases. He prevailed in both.

Over that period of years, I had the opportunity to get to know David first hand. He has the utmost integrity. He will work tirelessly for a cause in which he believes.

He is focused and dependable. He does what he says he will do. He is a very devoted family man who dearly loves his wife and children.

He maintains high standards of ethics both for his own behavior and that of his associates. He has been a resident of Calabasas since 1994.

David is a brilliant lawyer as well as a seasoned communicator who listens. He understands how to get things done. He has a very special charisma. His consistently calm demeanor facilitates his special gift of charm that makes people believe in him.

He is president-elect of Kiwanis of Calabasas. He has served as a volunteer judge for the Calabasas Teen Court Program.

David also is a member of the Calabasas Library Commission and the Joint Powers Authority for the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center. He was president of the Calabasas Park Homeowners Association.

He is a strong and effective leader who understands the problems of the community and will make a huge difference if elected.

If you want to choose the candidate who cares about you, who cares about your family, your children and your future, there is really only one choice.

That choice is Jody Thomas.

Jody has proven that she is extremely concerned about our welfare and is very committed to the gorgeous environment that we all enjoy and want to see preserved.

Check out her track record and elect Jody Thomas to the Calabasas City Council.

I am urging you to get out and vote for Jody Thomas. You have heard that this is an unimportant election, that the incumbents and their appointee are doing a fine job, and that Calabasas is thriving. While yes, Calabasas is in a better position than many cities, it is far from perfect. It is wrought with corruption and nepotism and our budget is dwindling.

I would like to tell you why Jody Thomas is my hero for running in this race. First and most importantly, Jody stepped up.

While 22 applicants applied for the City Council seat months ago, nobody is running now. And seven people people ran in the last the 2011 election, yet only one brave woman is here now.

Most people fear running against incumbents and the political power and clout they hold. Jody fearlessly has stood up to protect the city she has lived in for 20 years. I have lived in Calabasas my whole life and have watched the city change; some for the better, some not. Becoming involved in city politics, I have seen Jody Thomas stand at the podium during countless city meetings and have seen her organize residents to stand up for their beliefs. She is a spokesperson for those in our city who were too frightened to speak in front of the council’s scrutinizing glare.

She has poured her heart out for this city for 20 years. Her daughter went through LVUSD same as I, so she knows how to creatively help keep our schools strong. She is a quick thinker and powerful speaker.

Mostly, Jody speaks on the issues of Calabasas as a mom and a resident—and straight from the heart.

We do not need to reelect city council members who have become career politicians.

It is time for some lively excitement and creative solutions from the Calabasas City Council.

I admire Jody for her strength in this David versus Goliath type election. I urge you to vote with me for Jody Thomas.
