Cops warn about bogus telemarketer selling ads

Since February, the Ventura Sheriff’s Department has been investigating a telemarketer who’s been posing as a deputy.

Several businesses, doctors and other types of service offices, have received calls from a subject identifying himself as "Dave Wilcox" or "Dep. Wilcox." The caller indicated that he was calling regarding a "police matter" and was attempting to sell space for advertisements in a magazine, the Police/Sheriff Yearbook.

The sheriff’s department has neither an employee by the name of Dave Wilcox nor any employee selling space for advertisements in the Police/Sheriff Yearbook.

The Ventura Police Department has also been conducting an investigation on similar complaints by the businesses in their area with regard to "Wilcox."

On Aug. 4, a person identifying himself as "Dep. Dave Wilcox" called a business in the city of Ventura, and the Ventura Police Department found the real identity. This information was forwarded to detectives in Camarillo for additional follow-up and investigation.

At this time, an arrest hasn’t been made and investigators request the public’s assistance in identifying any businesses that were contacted by a person identifying himself as "Dep. Wilcox" or "Dave Wilcox." If you or anyone you know has been contacted, please notify the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Camarillo Investigations Unit, at (805) 388-5158.
