Conservancy needs state funding

Gov. Schwarzenegger has on his desk the 2004-2005 budget with provisions crucial to the preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains. I would like to ask all concerned Acorn readers to urge the governor to approve full funding for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy as submitted by the legislature. The funding comes from voter-approved propositions 12, 40 and 50 and may only be used by the Conservancy to acquire and protect open space and environmentally sensitive areas.

Most people know that the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has done great work in our area. This year’s budget appropriation is especially crucial because of the real possibility that the Soka University campus, including 600 acres of undeveloped land, can be acquired and become a new and very significant state or national park. The Soka property lies in the heart of the mountains and is immediately adjacent to Malibu Creek State Park.

The governor needs to hear from us immediately. He may act on the budget at any time.
