Conejo Valley man guilty of embezzlement

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Major Fraud Division has obtained a conviction for 39-year-old Blair Dowd of Newbury Park for grand theft embezzlement.

Dowd worked as a bookkeeper from August 1998 until October 2000 for R.W. Hertel and Sons, Inc., a construction company in Ventura. An investigation revealed that Dowd, without authorization, wrote checks to himself totaling $21,017 and deposited them into his personal bank account for his own use.

Over a period of 16 months Dowd reportedly made false entries in the company’s accounts payable ledger to hide the theft from his employer. The thefts were discovered after Dowd left his employment at R.W. Hertel.

Dowd was later confronted by company officials and paid the money back.

On June 21, Superior Court Judge Bruce Clark accepted Dowd’s guilty plea.
