Conejo Jewish Day School celebrates anniversary

The Conejo Jewish Day School (CJDS) of Agoura Hills will mark its third year of existence with a gala banquet and concert on Sun., Feb. 29 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel, Woodland Hills. Highlighting the celebration will be a performance by the Conejo Jewish Day School Choir, a silent auction and an awards presentation. The event’s theme will be "Generation to Generation," in the spirit of linking past, present and future.

The school was founded in 2000 by a group of laypersons who volunteered their time, effort and resources to establish a traditional Jewish day school for elementary school-aged children. Though an independent organization, CJDS works closely with Chabad of the Conejo and adopts Chabad’s "positive and joy-instilling approach to education." Chabad’s executive director, Rabbi Moshe Bryski, serves as the school’s dean.

The event will honor Joe and Zena Simon, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Simons’ daughter Risa and son-in-law Mark Moskowitz will receive the Leadership Award. Joe Simon survived the Holocaust and upon coming to the U.S. opened one of the first kosher butcher shops and supermarkets in the San Fernando Valley.

"The Simons have been an influential and integral part of the Jewish community," said Mos-kowitz, a realtor with Century 21 America in Westlake Village. Moskowitz is described as "one of the instrumental forces behind the success of the Conejo Jewish Day School."

"Having been through what they have, Joe and Zena are committed—heart and soul—to the causes of Jewish education and Jewish survival," said Moskowitz. "Knowing this school as I do from the inside out, I couldn’t think of more worthy honorees for this ‘Generation to Generation’ celebration than Joe and Zena Simon. This event will not only serve as a vital lifeline of support for our school, it will be a sanctification of Torah and Jewish education and a very joyous, uplifting and heartwarming celebration of our Jewish heritage."
