Rice will speak about public service and civic engagement, followed by a Q&A led by CNBC special correspondent Jane Wells.

This is the inaugural event in the Gallegly Center Distinguished Speaker Series at CLU.

The lectures will feature renowned authors, experts and dignitaries who exemplify the idea of public service.

Rice served as the 66th secretary of state, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post.

She also served as President George W. Bush’s national security adviser from 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position.

From 1989 to 1991, Rice served on President George H.W. Bush’s National Security Council staff. She served as director, senior director of Soviet and East European affairs, and special assistant to the president for national security affairs.

In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, Rice held the position of special assistant to the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Raised in segregated Alabama by parents who encouraged her to pursue education, Rice earned a doctorate from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver.

Rice is the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Graduate School of Business and a professor of political science at Stanford University.

Proceeds from the event will fund scholarships and experiential learning opportunities for Gallegly Fellows in the CLU Master of Public Policy and Administration Program.

The fellowships are awarded through the Elton and Janice Gallegly Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement, which will be dedicated earlier on May 4.
