Community shred to combat I.D. theft




The city of Agoura Hills and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are co-sponsoring a community shred event on Sat., Oct. 9 to help Conejo Valley residents guard against identity theft.

The countywide event will take place in three cities—Agoura Hills, Norwalk and Los Angeles.

According to city officials, people from throughout the region can bring their personal documents to the Agoura Hills City Hall parking lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 9. Mobile shredding trucks will destroy documents free of charge.

Louis Celaya, assistant to the city manager, said that the sheriff’s department will accept donations for 999 for Kids, a program developed by the sheriff’s department and the Los Angeles County Department of Children’s Services in 1985 to help physically and mentally handicapped children who have been identified as victims of the severe cases of child abuse, neglect and family violence.

Donations to the Sheriff ’s Youth Foundation charity and March of Dimes will also be accepted during the day.

Celaya said law enforcement representatives also will attend the event to offer tips to residents on how to protect themselves from identity theft.
