Community helps in dog rescue

Thank you to all the incredibly kind people who helped my niece find her dog last week. Bello slipped out of his collar and harness when he heard a loud noise, and just disappeared in a heartbeat.

Mary drove around from 9 p.m., when he got away at the corner of Westlake and Thousand Oaks boulevards, until Bello was found 12 hours later. Needless to say, they were both exhausted.

As Mary had searched, she stopped everyone she saw and asked if they had seen a black and white border collie. People would offer to help look, took her cellphone number and were generally so gracious that it was a great comfort to her.

Ultimately, a man entering the office building across from the Ralphs mall said he’d just seen a black and white dog and had tried to catch him, but Bello was so traumatized that he just ran.

Luckily Mary came upon the gentlemen shortly thereafter, and with the information he could give her she was able to focus her search and find her pet.

The “kindness of strangers” has turned a scary experience into a lesson, reminding us that we all need each other.
