Color of Ochs Christian High School now on the back burner in Westlake

The city of Westlake Village is backpedaling from earlier criticism about the color of a local school.

In February, Westlake Village city councilmembers discussed opinions regarding the paint on Oaks Christian High School (OCHS).

Several thought the initial color was only primer, but were surprised to learn that it was, in fact, the final coat of paint.

The school, which faces the 101 Freeway, appeared as a bleak concrete structure, according to those unhappy with gray. Councilmem-bers said they wanted something more esthetically pleasing.

But OCHS is still an unfinished work. According to Mayor Mark Rutherford, more landscaping is being planned and modified. The lawn and fencing haven’t been finished and the trim color of the building is still under consideration. Further construction will also follow.

Rutherford explained that a shaded outdoor structure, similar to a patio, should take shape soon. The shaded area will be between the gym and the main classroom structure, according to Rutherford. It will be a resting area and include space for lockers.

In terms of repainting the school to a more cosmetically pleasing color, Rutherford said Westlake Village is taking a step back. "Right now, everything is up in the air," he said.

Rutherford said city and school officials have looked at options and new colors were proposed. But everyone, he said, agreed to wait until the campus is finished.

"What is this thing really supposed to look like?" is the question that Rutherford said must he answered. No decision should be made, he said, on repainting OCHS without a final glimpse of the finished product.

With many works of art, viewers are often surprisingly pleased with the finished results.

In the case of OCHS, if councilmembers still don’t like the color, the topic will be reintroduced.

Time will tell.
