City proposes measure to protect vital open space

Calabasas residents will be asked on the Nov. 8 ballot just how far they’re willing to go to protect open space in the city.

Measure D asks whether the city should adopt an ordinance requiring two-thirds voter approval before any existing open space in the city can be re-zoned for another use.

The city feels the ordinance would encourage the preservation of agriculture, natural resources, private and public outdoor recreational uses.

The ordinance would “maintain the character of the city,” city officials said, and if the measure passes, only the voters would be able to re-designate open space to a different land use.

The ballot measure requires a majority vote to pass.

If adopted, the new land use law would take effect 10 days after the Calabasas City Council certifies the results of the election.

For more information about the ordinance or to see an impartial analysis of the measure prepared by the city attorney, go to the city’s website at www.cityofcalabasas.com or call city hall at (818) 878-4225.
