We hear stories so frequently in the news about people committing hateful acts that it’s refreshing to be reminded of our local residents whose good deeds rise above the usual expectations.

The city of Westlake Village wants to recognize the exceptional work of outstanding citizens by accepting nominations for the annual Citizen and Youth Recognition Program (CYRP).

The purpose of the CYRP is to identify and recognize on an individual and organizational basis outstanding individuals who’ve enhanced or improved the quality of life in the community as well as outstanding elementary- to high-school-age youth.

Nominees must be residents of Westlake Village in Los Angeles County.

Their contributions to the community must be in the area of academics, music, art, sports, valor or community services.

Nominations will be taken now through Feb. 28. Shortly thereafter, winners will be announced at a city council meeting, during which a $500 scholarship will be awarded to the winning youth and a $500 donation will go to the charity of choice of the winner of the citizen’s award.

"This program offers a great way to honor someone you know who’s contributed to the betterment of the community," said Kerry Kallman, community relations coordinator for the city of Westlake Village.

The nomination process begins with the filing of a Citizen Recognition program application form, which can be obtained through the city of Westlake Village. The application asks for information describing the individual and the basis for the recognition.

Individuals, nonprofit organizations, teachers, coaches, businesses and service clubs may submit nominations. However, an individual may not nominate a family member for an award.

The Cultural Recreation Advisory Board of the city of Westlake Village will review all applications and consider all nominations according to the criteria set for this recognition program.

For additional information and to obtain an application, please contact Kallman through the city of Westlake Village at (818) 706-1613.
