JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers SPEAKING THEIR MINDS-Agoura Hills residents Lisa Couch, left, and Pam Stringer, discuss plans for Agoura Village, the main topic on the agenda at a city hall meeting last Wednesday.

It was a tailgate party with a twist.

Except for the six-foot submarine sandwich, pizza, brownie bites and soda, it wasn’t so much a party as a protest against the Agoura Village plan that was on the city council’s agenda last week.

Mary Altmann, a Malibou Lake resident who organized the tailgate party in the parking lot of city hall, formed “Citizens For Sensitive Development” to oppose the development plan. She had obtained about 260 signatures and encouraged everybody to speak their minds at the meeting.

The opponents gathered before the meeting to talk strategy and fuel their energy

“Already this mountain has been dug into,” Malibou Lake resident Karen Machon said. “This mountain is a sacred mountain, and the Chumash Indians have burial sites here. I think that should be worth something.”

“It’s like putting 10 pounds of stuff in a five pound bag,” said Joe D’allaqua who’s lived in Malibou Lake since he was a child.

Most of the protestors were worried about the risk of fire and being able to exit safely from what is expected to become a high traffic area.
