Chili cook-off heats up in Simi Valley


 

 

The Knights of Columbus, Simi Valley Council 5803, will present the 32nd annual Chili Cook-Off and Car Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun., June 9 on the grounds of St. Rose of Lima School, behind the church, 1305 Royal Ave., Simi Valley.

The chili prizes will be $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.

Returning this year is the Best Restaurant Competition.

Trophies will be awarded in three categories.

Entrance requirements for ICS chili cooks is a minimum of 6 gallons of People’s Choice chili. In addition, cooks will be charged a $50 fee if they are not ICS members.

There is no fee to compete only in the Peoples’ Choice category, but a minimum of 10 gallons must be cooked.

The car show will have 16 categories for classic, custom, street rods, muscle, sport, trucks and special interest vehicles. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to all category winners, including Best of Show.

Car entrance fee is $35 until May 30 and $40 thereafter. Preregistration is suggested since entry is limited to 130 vehicles. Last year the car show sold out.

Family fun includes rides, a rock climbing wall, moon bounce, game booths and vendors.

Nonstop entertainment features live bands as well as live remotes from local radio and TV.

Food and drink for sale will include hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, ice cream, funnel cake, snow cones, beer, margaritas and soda.

Event proceeds will assist the Knights in their charitable works.

General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors age 60 and up and $3 for children ages 6 to 12. All active military with ID are admitted free.

Chili taste tickets are 50 cents each. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Overflow parking is permitted across the street at Royal High School.
