All three of Agoura High School’s national champion competition Spirit Teams have qualified for the upcoming national competitions.

They did so at the 2002 Spirit Regional Competition held at the high school on Jan. 19. The 95-member squad along with their parents hosted this event for the United Spirit Association, which drew local and statewide teams. The qualifier enables them to compete at the national competitions on March 15 to 17 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Agoura High School holds a back-to-back title in the crowdleading division.

Funds raised at the event go to team members to defray their costs as they travel to the nationals. The team is coached by Eileen McGrew with Vicki Koch as advisor.

Also qualifying for the nationals at the event was Oak Park High School’s cheerleading team under Coach Carolyn Purkey. The 20-member, primarily junior varsity squad took first place in their large varsity show cheer division, the sixth consecutive year that Oak Park’s cheer squad has taken this title.

They were the only area school that both qualified and placed in their division.
