Changes coming to OPHS

Changes will affect students at Oak Park High School (OPHS) this year.

Two reflect changes in the state’s graduation requirements. OPHS will drop California history and add health, a new requirement for the class of 2004 (this year’s freshmen class).

The state now requires a semester-long health class—in the past, the subject was taught in physical education and biology classes. The students will still receive 3.5 semesters of social sciences, more than the state requires, said assistant principal Dave Becker.

Also in keeping with new state graduation requirements, OPHS will offer freshmen the opportunity to take the new proficiency exam which will be a mandated part of graduation statewide.

In ninth grade, the students could either pass the test and be done with it, or fail and see where they need improvement in the years to come.

In the future, students will have the chance to take the test four times throughout the year, but for the 2000-2001 year, it will be offered only in the spring, Becker said.

Also new this fall will be six new portable buildings and a new temporary library.

Another change, Becker said, is that all classrooms will have a new numbering system, designed to make the campus more understandable.
