Chabad walks through history to celebrate Purim

Chabad of the Conejo will celebrate Purim with a family festival at 7 p.m. next Mon., March 17 at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel, 880 S. Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village.

Participants will meet the characters of the story of Purim and be challenged to help in the cause of overthrowing the ruthless "Haman" by following the instructions of the righteous Mordechai and Esther.

"This walk-through style show will highlight the history of Purim and the lessons learned of how to combat evil," said Rabbi Moshe Bryski, executive director of Chabad.

As children and adults "travel" through each scene and meet the characters, they will chart the universal message of Purim and recognize that their acts of kindness and goodness may help change the world and "make it a brighter place for all" according to Chabad.

Purim is a Jewish holiday commemorating the deliverance of the Jewish people from the evil chamberlain Haman’s decree, who sought to annihilate them.

The festival will also include the "Mad Hats" of San Diego, providing participants an opportunity to create holiday hats of their own, and entertainment by juggler Ivan Pecel. There will be the reading of the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) and the distribution of "gragers" (noisemakers) to be used when the name of Haman is mentioned.

Admission is $4. Children and adults are invited to attend in the costume of their choice.

At 6 and 9 a.m. on Tues., March 18, Purim services will be conducted at the Conejo Jewish Academy, 30345 Canwood St., Agoura Hills.
