Celebrities join with Boys & Girls Clubs to honor some of area’s exceptional youth

The community is welcome to attend the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley’s 12th annual Superstars of the Year Celebration from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sun., March 22 in the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. T.O. Blvd.

Admission is free and reservations are not required.

The event recognizes local youth and volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the club.

During the festivities, celebrity stars will host, perform and meet and greet the audience before the show and during intermission.

Members of the B&G Clubs will give musical, dance and drama performances.

The Youth of the Year will be presented in two categories: 14 to 18 years old and 13 years old and younger. Winners will receive a cash prize and certificates from local businesses.

The youth in the 14- to18- year-old category can go on to participate in area coastal, state and regional competitions with an opportunity to win $50,000 in scholarships.

Cabrillo Music Theatre will present the actress playing Mary Poppins from its upcoming musical production in April. The actress will perform a selection of songs along with some surprise character friends.

Two groups from the Cabrillo Music Theatre—Kabrillo Kids and Cabrillo Teen Project—will entertain guests outside the theatre as they arrive.

Cabrillo Music Theatre has donated two “Mary Poppins” orchestra seat tickets that will be raffled off at the Superstars event. Raffle tickets are $2 for one and $5 for three.

The afternoon will also have a silent auction with merchandise donated by the community.

Celebrities who will provide entertainment include:

Alyson Stoner, 21, host. Stoner has appeared in Lionsgate’s “Step Up” franchise, Disney’s “Camp Rock” movies and Fox’s “Cheaper by the Dozen 1 and 2.” She has voiced over 30 characters for DreamWorks, Sony, Nickelodeon, Disney and Cartoon Network. She has danced worldwide including opening 48 shows for the Jonas Brothers. She’s worked on two award-winning animated series, “Phineas & Ferb” and “Legend of Korra.”

Dexter Darden, 23, co-host, recently completed “Scorch Trails,” a sequel to “Maze Runner.” He also starred in the movies “Joyful Noise” and “Minuteman.” He has written and performed his own music. He first performed professionally at Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for kids with blood diseases and cancer. He also helps raise funds for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia sickle cell anemia unit.

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Small, performer. Small can be seen in the feature film “Spare Parts.” She was a series regular on the Discovery Kids’ “Hip Hop Harry.” A veteran of many television commercials, she also had a guest starring role on ABC’s “The Middle” and portrayed Baker Elf in “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.” Small also cowrote and will perform the song “Gravity” at the Superstars event.

Maile Flanagan, presenter and meet and greet. She plays the principal on Disney XD’s “Lab Rats” and has voiced the lead in the cartoon “Naruto” for over 500 episodes. In 2006, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Performer in the animated program “Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks.” She had recurring roles on “Shameless,” “Bad Teacher” and “The Class.” Flanagan won the LA Weekly Award for Female Comedy Performance for her role in Justin Tanner’s play “Day Drinkers.”

Cameron Boyce, presenter. Boyce has been a series regular on “Jessie” on the Disney Channel and will soon have his own Disney XD series “Gamers Guide.” Boyce performs comedy and dance in addition to stunt work and voiceovers.

Ashleigh Maree Ross, meet and greet. Ashleigh starred in the Australian Disney “Mary Poppins” as one of the two children. She is a dancer and actress.

Kym Gold, meet and greet. Gold co-created True Religion Brand jeans, a major retail clothing company. She wrote the book “Gold Standard,” about her business and fashion branding experience. The book is set for a September 2015 release.

At the event, attendees will have an opportunity to download a version of Katy Perry’s song, “Roar” that was performed at last year’s event by Chrystina Sayers, Ashlee Keating and Post Ali along with B&G Clubs alumni, Troy Sylvester, Devin Papadol and Kyle Warner.
