Celebration of Life gala




The Cancer Support Community Valley/ Ventura/ Santa Barbara will present its Evening of Hope Celebration of Life Gala from 6 p.m. to midnight Fri., May 2 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Two Dole Drive, Westlake Village.

One of the biggest annual fundraisers for the society, the event will feature an awards ceremony, entertainment, dinner and a live auction of big-ticket items.

Award honorees have made an impact on the well-being of cancer patients and their families through their work with the society.

Celebration of Excellence honoree Mai Brooks, MD, is a surgical oncologist/general surgeon practicing in Thousand Oaks. As an active member of the CSCVVSB Professional Advisory Board, Brooks presents educational seminars to cancer patients and their families; helps identify speakers for educational workshops; and refers patients to CSCVVSB for support.

In 2012 Brooks and her family opened their home for the 2012 Holiday Homes Tour fundraiser.

Celebration of Hope honoree Lynn Buchanan is a two-time breast cancer survivor. She is a five-year CSCVVSB volunteer and a past co-chair of the Gala Volunteer Committee. As a member of the Speakers Bureau, she educates community groups about CSCVVSB’s support services by sharing her personal story of breast cancer survival.

Celebration of Life honoree Gail Lemberger has been volunteering weekly at CSCVVSB for three years, assisting with office work and event preparations. She has asks her Facebook friends to donate to the society each year on her birthday. An eight-year breast cancer survivor, she attends the Stage IV participant group and other programs at CSCVVSB.

Celebration of Philanthropy honoree Amgen Inc. is a founding member of the CSCVVSB and has supported the organization for the past 23 years. Amgen’s funding helps ensure that the society’s educational workshops and child/ family programs remain free to all participants. In 2005, Amgen created Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative to increase awareness of resources available to people affected by cancer.
