A man suspected of committing multiple burglaries in the upper Malibu Canyon area has been sentenced to 160 days in jail for a parole violation, court records show.
No other charges have been filed against Anthony Rauda, 42, in the two months since his high-profile arrest in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Rauda, who is believed to have lived in the coastal mountain range for several years, received his sentence Nov. 29 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Originally taken into custody Oct. 10, the arrest made headlines locally after Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said they had not ruled out a possible connection between Rauda and the slaying of Tristan Beaudette— who was shot and killed June 22 in Malibu Creek State Park while sleeping in a tent with his two young daughters—as well as in reports of gunfire in the area over the past two years.
Rauda was spotted on security camera footage at one of the businesses he’s alleged to have burglarized carrying a rifle, police said. Investigators have said they are conducting forensic tests on the firearm to determine if it was the weapon that ended Beaudette’s life. In the weeks following Rauda’s arrest, sheriff’s deputies conducted further searches of the mountains where Rauda was found, looking for evidence to link him to the murder or the burglaries.
Questions to Los Angeles County law enforcement officials and the district attorney’s office regarding plans to charge Rauda with the other crimes have gone unanswered. According to online records, he is due in court Dec. 13 to answer to the crime of being a convicted felon in possession of firearm, a charge that could add another 180 days to his sentence.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell said Rauda had been imprisoned for weapons violations and previous burglaries and was supposed to answer to a parole officer. He did not. If no additional charges are added, Rauda could be free by March. He’s already served around 60 days in Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail and has been credited time off for good behavior.
Rauda appeared in court Nov. 1 but a judge dismissed him after the transient began shouting obscenities. At his rescheduled hearing Nov. 29, Rauda was brought into the courtroom strapped to a wheelchair and wearing a “spit hood” to prevent a repeat of the Nov. 1 incident in which he also accosted members of the court.
Unsolved
Several of Rauda’s alleged burglaries happened in quick succession between September and October, police said.
Two different Malibu Canyon Road businesses were burglarized Sept. 24, Sept. 30 and Oct. 4; and someone broke into the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center on Oct. 9. In each of the burglaries, the perpetrator took items of food.
After two failed manhunts, detectives tracked boot prints to a ravine one mile north of Mulholland Highway and one mile west of Las Virgenes Road, where they arrested Rauda after a brief standoff.
The public’s interest in the man stems largely from the Beaudette case, which struck fear in residents from Malibu to the Conejo Valley and beyond who frequent the state park. And yet there’s no indication at this point Rauda had anything to do with the murder.
