Calvary presents ‘A Time for Christmas’

"A Time for Christmas," a musical extravaganza featuring a cast of more than 200 Conejo Valley residents, runs today through Sunday at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village.

It marks the 23rd consecutive year that the church has presented a Christmas event.

"This will be a night of joy, fun and power," said musical director David Clydesdale, who co-wrote "A Time for Christmas" in 1995 with Paul McCusker.

"This program is fast-paced and full of surprises, beginning with the addition of a live horse and sleigh that should delight the kids. No one will be bored, and everyone will be challenged to reflect anew on the real meaning of Christmas," Clydesdale said.

"A Time for Christmas" was originally set in England, but this year’s script has been rewritten by Newbury Park resident Steve Moore and by Calvary’s worship arts manager Matt Reithmayr. The site is now Southern California, but the Broadway-style musical still maintains the feel of an imaginative adventure through 2,000 years of Christmases.

Clydesdale, a T.O. resident and multiple winner of Christian music’s Dove Award, estimates that since its premier, "A Time for Christmas" has been performed in front of almost 10 million people in North American churches.

The 70-minute presentation features the 120-member choir of Calvary Community Church, plus 20 actors and more than 100 young singers and dancers ranging in age from 5 to 18.

Performance times are 7 p.m. on Thurs. and Fri., Dec. 11 and 12; and 3 and 7 p.m. on Sat. and Sun., Dec. 13 and 14.

Tickets range in price up to $15. Those purchasing five tickets receive one free, while groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $12.
