Ruth Huyler Glass has been appointed as head of Calmont School in Calabasas, an independent, nonprofit K-8 school.

Glass, a Pacific Palisades resident for the past 10 years, has more than 30 years experience in education administration. She stated that the school’s location on 22 acres in the mountains of Malibu Canyon reminded her of her childhood in Ojai, and was a key component in her decision to accept the position.

“Calmont’s magnificent setting, combined with a strong environmental studies program, gives students an unparalleled connection between their academic studies and the world outside their door,” said Glass.

Students hike in the mountains on a weekly basis and have many opportunities to integrate their classroom activities with the environment.

Under Glass’s leadership, tuition for the 2010-2011 school year has been reduced 25 percent to $15,000.

“The lower tuition will allow more families the opportunity of a Calmont education for their children, and also acknowledges the difficult economic circumstances we have all experienced,” said Glass.
