Students at Calmont School in Calabasas recently collected toiletries, sunscreen, candies and DVDs to ship to the U.S. Army Bravo Company 1-82 serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The children also sent along a large blue, hand-decorated sign with words of encouragement such as “Be safe!” and “You are heroes!”

While collecting the items, students learned that the uncle of Calmont student Bella Medrano is serving in the Middle East. They decided to send the supplies to the uncle and the persons serving in his company.

“(Uncle Rodney) went over in April and is deployed indefinitely,” said Terilynn Medrano, Bella’s mother and Rodney’s sister. “He’ll be there at least a year and a half.”

“They love the movies and the hard candies that don’t melt and all the other items,” Medrano said, “but what really means the most is the fact that they are in our thoughts and prayers. Just that were thinking about them and remembering them.”

Medrano hadn’t heard from her brother a several weeks. He e-mailed a brief note recently to let her know he’d been out escorting medi-vacs and how grateful they are for the children’s efforts on their behalf.

“I think everyone in the school wrote something nice on the poster,” said Miranda Anapol, Student Government vice president.

The banner is part of the school’s goal to perform 11 community service projects during the school year.
