Call for high school jazz musicians

The Ventura Music Festival is sponsoring the third annual Student Jazz Competition, open to all high school students in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties.

The contest winner will play with Latin-jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo when the musician and his ensemble perform at Ventura High School Theatre on Feb. 13.

The judges will pick five finalists from submitted CDs. The finalists will perform two songs live onstage with the Venturabased jazz trio Coda at 3 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Laurel Theater, 1006 E. Main St., Ventura.

The winner will play on stage with Escovedo, receive a $500 scholarship and complimentary tickets for his entire high school jazz band to the Escovedo show. Second place will be awarded a $250 scholarship and third place will receive a $150 scholarship. Both second- and third-place winners will receive complimentary tickets to the live competition and Escovedo concert.

All students who participate in the competition will receive discount tickets to the concert.
