Calabasas grant will help MRT with headquarters expansion

The Calabasas City Council unanimously approved a grant of $50,000 that could lead to the headquarters expansion of a prominent environmental agency.

Mountains Restoration Trust is a nonprofit land trust whose mission is to preserve natural acreage in the Santa Monica Mountains through restoration, education and land acquisition.

The money will pay for a team of consultants to prepare an architectural design study to build additional facilities at the agency’s offices at Headwaters Corner in Calabasas.

“In essence we’d just be leveraging our money, helping them with the seed money,” said Mayor Jonathon Wolfson.

The study will build on features described in the 2008 Headwaters Corner master plan, which includes a classroom and public restroom.

“As part of this grant, we want to fix up the house, which had a septic fail, and it will have a connection with the sewer,” said City Manager Tony Coroalles.

“It would allow them, if they have classrooms, to have a bathroom facility,” Coroalles said.

The money will come from the city’s open space and environmental programs fund, which contains a balance of $150,000.

“The architectural drawings will be used to get grants for construction, said Councilmember Mary Sue Maurer.

The study will provide cost estimates in addition to the drawings, which are necessary for grant applications.

The work is expected to be completed by Feb. 1, 2010.
