Calabasas has a reputation for protecting its natural environment and city officials say they want to recognize those citizens who help keep the area pristine.

Earlier this month, Debra O’Hare-Bruschaber of the Mountains Restoration Trust received the first Calabasas Environmental Excellence Award, a symbol of the city’s commitment to preserving the environment.

“She’s done so many things in the past 15 years,” said Alex Farassati, Calabasas Environmental Services Manager. “We just want to recognize those who’ve done so much in the past and who may not have been recognized.”

The award recognizes people and organizations who promote healthier living in Calabasas by reducing waste and conserving energy and natural resources with exceptional commitment or innovation.

The city honored O’HareBruschaber in recognition of her years of outstanding efforts to acquire, enhance and protect Headwaters Corner on Mulholland Highway and Old Topanga Canyon Road in Calabasas, and in working to preserve open space and develop public trails in the city.

Calabasas will give an environmental excellence award to someone who’s nominated and deserving of the award, according to Farassati. The city will give the award on merit, not on an annual or monthly basis, he said.

When selecting recipients, city officials consider measurable improvements to environmental quality, creativity, environmental achievements, commitment to protecting the environment, promoting community involvement and other core values of the award.

Anyone can nominate an individual or institution for the Calabasas Environmental Excellence Award by downloading a nomination form from the city’s website at www.cityofcalabasas. com.

Completed forms can be returned to Alex Farassati, environmental services manager, via fax at (818) 878-4205 or e-mail at afarassati@cityofcalabasas.com.

For more information, call Farassati at (818) 878-4225.

Calabasas also presented the second “Recycler of the Month” award to Dawn Patterson. She took home $250 for her dedication and commitment to beautifying Calabasas by regularly recycling bottles, cans, papers, newspapers, glass, plastics, metals, electronics and green wastes.

Each month, the Calabasas Environmental Commission selects a recycler from a drawing. The city mails drawing cards to residents and also includes cards in the Calabasas Newsletter. Residents must qualify to be recyclers.

Entries are limited to only one person per household in Calabasas per year.
