The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce recently presented the 2002 Bill Van Gieson Award to Phyllis Power, director of the Leonis Adobe Museum, for her contributions of preserving the Leonis Museum and the Old Town area as educational and historical attractions.

Power organized the Friends of the Adobe preservation effort in the early 1960s to help Ray Phillips restore the home of the 18th century "King of Calabasas." Originally slated to be turned into a grocery store, the site ultimately became Los Angeles City Landmark No. 1.

As director of the Adobe, Power has instituted school tours which are enthusiastically booked up well in advance.

The museum offers an opportunity for the public to experience a day in the life of a California Rancho circa 1880, including live animals in the ranch yard. It is open from 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and on Sunday; from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
