Bullies wing it over Conejo



Three shadows wheeled across the backyard patio of the Thousand Oaks home where I was visiting a friend. Peering skyward, I picked out the owners of those shadows. Two crows were harassing a red-tailed hawk, whose scientific moniker is Buteo jamaicensis.
I’ve seen numberless redtailed hawks in my years in the Santa Monica Mountains. Often they glide or hover so high it’s hard to catch a lot of detail without binoculars.
But this one bird at that particular moment was not far above the rooftops. ...
