Buckle up, or else

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is stepping up seat belt enforcement

fforts, joining forces with the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

From May 15 to June 4, local deputies will increase enforcement of the state’s safety belt laws. Those caught not buckling up will be issued a ticket that carries a maximum fine of $91 in L.A. County.

“The goal of the effort is to boost the state’s safety belt use rate and reduced fatalities with a special emphasis on young adults,” the sheriff’s department said.

According to reports, car crashes are still the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 3 and 33. Between 1975 and 2000, safety belts prevented 135,000 fatalities and 3.8 million injuries, officials say.
