A greener city

The City of Calabasas will host an Arbor Day celebration from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sat., March 23 at Gates Canyon Park, 25801 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Calabasas.

Festivities will include tree planting activities and a smart gardening workshop in which participants will learn about composting. The event will conclude with a tree planting ceremony.

Arbor Day began in the 19th century when an estimated 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on April 10, 1872.

Calabasas has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 14 years, which means the city has demonstrated a commitment to caring for its public trees. The designation is given by the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

Eco-friendly exhibitors wanted

Calabasas officials are seek- ing eco-friendly exhibitors for the 2013 Earth Day Celebration/ Green Expo taking place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sat., April 13 at the Las Virgenes Creek site behind the Starbucks at 26531 Agoura Road.

More than 50 exhibitors from Los Angeles County usually participate in the event.

The festival is free to the public and features something for the whole family, including activities to teach children about the environment while they have fun, organizers said.

More than 2,200 people visited the 2012 expo, which offered residents opportunities to learn the benefits of energy conservation and helping the environment.

Public agencies, nonprofit organizations and private companies that provide green services or products are encouraged to participate. Each exhibitor will be provided with a table to set up educational and promotional materials.

Easter Bunny to join festivities

Families are invited to enjoy an elegant brunch presented by Atmosphere Catering at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center on Sun., March 31 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The event on the tennis patio will include breakfast and activities for children, including an egg hunt, games, crafts and photos with the Easter Bunny.

Admission is $25 per adult, $15 per child ages 5 to 14 and free for children 4 and younger.
