Barking up the right park

Conejo Recreation and Park District will host Bark in the Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., May 5 at Conejo Creek Park North, 1379 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

The family-friendly event is free to the public. Pet dogs are welcome.

The event will have vendors, dog apparel, veterinarians, dog contests, dog races, dog entertainment, dog food, dog games, dog agility course and pet adoptions.

Big laughs raise funds for cause

Steph Clark, creator of Funny Girl Events, will present a free fundraiser comedy show to benefit Pets for Vets Ventura County Chapter at 7:30 p.m. Thurs., May 17 at the Elks Lodge, 158 N Conejo School Road, Thousand Oaks. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Clark and her husband, Tom, also a comedian, have been performing stand-up comedy across the country and bringing attention to PFV for two years.

The nonprofit Pets For Vets matches rescue pets with American veterans that often return home with physical or emotional injuries.

After the show, attendees can purchase shirts that say, “I’m a rescue,” and a percentage of the proceeds goes to PFV.

The fundraiser will have a comedian veteran, Julian Vazquez, along with Mary Gallagher, who has parents that are both Marines.

The event will also have food, drinks and a raffle.

Admission is free; donations will be accepted. The comedy show is rated PG-13.

Unleash your dog’s inner Picasso

The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa along with VCA Westlake Village Animal Hospital will host a Pawcasso event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sun., May 6 at the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks, 1948 Thousand Oaks Blvd.

Each dog will paint its own framed masterpiece to take home and cherish or give as a gift to its owners.

The event will also have raffle prizes and giveaways. Water and treats will be provided for pets.

No reservation is needed.

All dogs must be leashed. Well behaved dogs are encouraged to participate.

CMATO members are free. Suggested donation for nonmembers is $5.

Parade along the beach

Canine Adoption and Rescue League (C.A.R.L.) seeks participants, visitors and dog lovers of all ages for the 21st annual Pooch Parade from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., May 5 at Ventura Beach Promenade Park.

The day will have the parade, races, pet-related vendors and displays, food, live music, beer and wine, demos and contests.

New offerings this year are the Bluefang Dogathon 5K and 10K, with start times of 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. respectively.

A silent auction featuring hundreds of special items will be held on site from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (last bid). Proceeds will help pay for supplies and medical care for dogs and puppies in C.A.R.L.’s Second Chance Program.

The benefit’s main fundraiser, the Pooch Parade, is a scenic round-trip walk along the Ventura Beach Promenade, starting at 10 a.m. All dogs must be leashed at all times.

Entry fees are $45 the day of event for individuals or $50 for teams of more than one walker in the group. Registration will be open from 8:30 to 9 a.m.
